The Story of Your Food: Tomatoes

Posted 4/29/2017 7:46pm by Dennis Skoworodko.

Tomatoes can be the most sublime of flavors, or the worst of flavors! Why you ask? Most tomatoes varieties that are grown commercially are chosen with two considerations out weighting all others – “are they sturdy?” and “do they all ripen at the same time on the plant?” Taste? Sadly not even on the radar!

Tomatoes come in two overriding types, determinate and indeterminate. Determinate plants grow in a small bush like shape and don’t need supports to grow on. Also, the tomatoes on the plants tend to ripen more or less all at the same time. Indeterminate plants keep growing as a long vine, and need to be supported off the ground, they tend to ripen in stages as the vine grows longer, and many times are a more tender fragile tomato.

So why grow an indeterminate variety with all that extra work and care needed? TASTE! In our experience, we have found the varieties that grow as indeterminate far superior in taste to determinate varieties. And we are all about taste!

We have started seedlings of 12 different varieties for this season (all indeterminate). They are growing well and, personally, I cannot wait to taste one of my favorite treats of the summer. Lovely to eat fresh and can be cooked into so many different treats to enjoy all winter long.
